Our Place Kaitangata Community Plan Progress
Project 1: River access
The Kaitangata Boat Ramp underwent widening and repairs in August 2024, with the physical work managed and funded by Kaitangata Promotions. CDC facilitated and financed the resource consent before handing it over to Blair Thompson who lead the rest of the Clutha River project.
A project is in the planning phase to create a gravel walking track from the boat ramp to approximately 800m downstream along the riverbank. This track will be located on road reserve land and will offer access to a popular swimming area. Community fundraising efforts are supporting this initiative, overseen by Kaitangata Promotions, with Rachel Harrison as the project leader.
Potential future projects may involve enhancing the riverside reserve area with amenities like picnic tables.
Project 2: Walking and Cycling
The Exmouth Street footpath has been renewed.
Currently, the Council is not engaged in any other significant walking and cycling projects, except for the riverside trail.
Project 3: Kaitangata Pool
The handover of the Kaitangata pool from CDC to the community trust was finalized in February 2024.
The complete replacement of the pool roof was carried out in late 2023 by local builders, costing around $113,000.
The trust is currently focusing on additional upgrades, such as enhancing the pool filtration and chemical systems, and considering the installation of a heating system.
Project 4: Victoria Park Reserve
The Council removed several large trees from Victoria Park based on the community's request. The trees were casting shade and causing damage to important facilities like the pool and the playground.
Project 5: War Memorial Reserve
A significant upgrade of the War Memorial Reserve was successfully completed and unveiled in February 2024. The project was spearheaded by Kaitangata Promotions, with financial backing from CDC, Otago Community Trust, and Clutha Development.
The community raised $65,000 through fundraising efforts and generously provided materials and labor for this initiative.
The project was overseen by Joyce Beck and a dedicated team from Kaitangata Promotions.
Project 6: Public Toilets
We were thrilled to announce the grand opening of the new Kaitangata Public Toilets in July 2024.
There was strong community backing for additional public facilities during consultation, and we're over the moon to be able to flush away any worries and address this need.
Joyce from Kaitangata Promotion says, “The Kaitangata Promotions is delighted to partner with the Clutha District Council to fulfil another of our goals in the ‘Our Place Kaitangata’ Programme. We look forward to working together on other projects in our community.”
This new toilet will cater to all the bustling locations in central Kaitangata, from the skate park and BMX track to the War Memorial and Water Street reserves.
This was a Council-led project, with guidance from Kaitangata Promotions.
Project 7: Roading
A trial of Otta Seal (bitumen) has been confirmed for approximately 150m of Water Street in 2024/25. This will be funded from existing Council budgets.
Project 8: Wangaloa Domain Reserve
The community identified a range of enhancements they would like to see on this reserve, through consultation for the Our Place Kaitangata Community Plan. These include improving access to the beach and improvements to the reserve itself. This project has not yet commenced however. The reserve has stunning views overlooking the Pacific Ocean, but is remote and prone to vandalism.
