Investigative work to commence on State Highway 1, Milton
Clutha District Council is working collaboratively with NZTA to investigate areas of slumping identified at the north end of Milton, on State Highway 1, between Elizabeth Street and Melville Avenue.
Although the state highway is managed and maintained by NZTA, the wastewater, stormwater and drinking water pipes below the surface of the road are owned by Clutha District Council.
Council is investigating the state of the infrastructure in the slumping area, and is working to understand the earth’s condition beneath the sealed road, by completing core sampling. Council will also be filling the slumping portions of the highway, as a temporary measure to minimise traveller disruption. This work will be weather-dependent; however, Council’s contractors are looking to start the temporary levelling as soon as possible.
The appropriate next steps will be determined including any infrastructure repair or replacement once the ground investigation results have been received.
Working safely on our roads is a priority for Council, NZTA and our contractors, which is why traffic management plans will be in place while this work is completed. Travellers may experience disruptions and delays while the investigative work is carried out.
Council will advise the public once a date has been set for the temporary levelling work.
