Balclutha Ward Councillor resigns
Balclutha Ward Councillor Kevin Barron has resigned from the Clutha District Council.
Clutha District Council CE Steve Hill received Mr Barron’s resignation on 10 December and said as it was less than a year out from the next local body election it did not require Council to a hold by-election.
Due to the Local Government Act 2002 (Schedule 7), elected members have the right to resign office by notice in writing addressed and delivered to the chief executive of the local authority. The notice takes effect on the day on which it is delivered to the chief executive.
Council is required to determine at its next Council Meeting whether the extraordinary vacancy is filled or left vacant until the elections in October 2025.
The next Council meeting to address this decision is on 20 February 2025.
Mr Barron was a first-term councillor elected in 2022.
