Replacement of Water Street Reserve public toilet in Kaitangata
Work is scheduled to commence on Monday, 26 February 2024 to replace the public toilet at the Water Street Reserve, located near the corner of Exmouth Street & Water Street.
The decision was made to replace this toilet with the surplus Exeloo toilet unit previously located next to the Balclutha War Memorial Hall. The replacement toilet is needed as the current toilet in central Kaitangata is no longer fit for purpose and only unlocked during BMX Club meets.
The toilet is to be demolished and then a strong, reliable foundation will be built in its place, to minimise liquefaction risks.
The replacement toilet will then be installed upon the new foundation.
Deputy Chief Executive Jules Witt says that the replacement toilet unit will be a much-needed upgrade of the existing amenity.
“Although used, the toilet block is in good condition, accessible, and fit for purpose.”
“The installation will ensure that we have fit for purpose amenities available to visitors of the BMX Park and the Water Street Reserve in Kaitangata”.
A temporary portaloo will be located at the site while the work is being completed, until such time as the replacement toilet is installed.
Clutha District Council has contracted Chapman Construction to complete the demolition and foundation work, as well as the subsequent installation of the replacement toilet.
The replacement toilet is one of three surplus toilet blocks that are to be relocated, as a result of the construction of the new Clutha Community Hub and the new public toilets in Balclutha. The remaining two toilets will be moved to Lawrence and Tuapeka Mouth.
The replacement toilet is expected to be installed and operational by late April.
