Free tyre recycling at Mount Cooee
Clutha residents will be able to recycle up to five tyres for free when they drop them off to the Mount Cooee Landfill.
Clutha District Council has joined the Tyrewise scheme as a registered receiver, playing a vital role in collecting, storing, and transferring unwanted tyres to the Tyrewise programme for repurposing into valuable products like playground matting, sports grounds, arena surfacing, and cement.
Council’s Head of Infrastructure Operations Jason Foster says "This marks a significant and exciting advancement, aligning with our waste management and minimisation strategy."
“Traditionally, tyres can often end up incorrectly in landfills, or end up getting illegally dumped, which is the least desirable option for waste management however, through this program, they can now be sustainably recycled which is a significant stride in our waste reduction efforts."
Effective September 1, 2024, tyre fees at Mount Cooee Landfill will be waived from Council’s fees and charges, subject to the following conditions for tyre acceptance:
- Only up to 5 tyres per visit will be accepted free of charge.
- Only pneumatic tyres within the program's scope will be accepted.
- The delivered tyres must be clean, free from dirt or any other foreign materials.
- Tyres must be de-rimmed before drop off.
Council encourages the community to bring their old tyres to Mount Cooee Landfill and participate in this program, contributing to a sustainable future for future generations.
