Backflow Prevention
Backflow poses a serious risk to our public water supply, and can affect the quality of our drinking water.
Clutha District Council is working with property owners to help prevent backflow in our communities.
What is backflow?
Backflow occurs when water flows back into the public network from a property.
Water pressure within the network ensures water is delivered to your property. However, if the water pressure changes in the network then backflow can occur, which may allow contaminants and chemicals to flow into the water supply network.
Backflow by back-siphonage
This happens when the pressure drops in the public water supply, causing water to be sucked backwards from private property into the public supply. Examples of when this may occur include:
- During a water main or plumbing break.
- During a water mains shutdown.
- When large volumes of water are drawn for fire protection.
Backflow by decreases in pressure
This happens when water pressure from a private property exceeds the pressure of the public water supply, causing water to be pushed into the public supply. Examples of when this may occur include:
- A pump system that is pumping at a greater pressure than the public water supply.
- A tank being installed at a higher level than the public water supply.
What is the risk?
Backflow can be a major threat to the health of our communities, due to the nature of chemicals and other potential contaminants being used in our homes and businesses.
We all have a part to play in keeping our drinking water safe.
CDC Backflow Prevention Programme
Council has developed a Backflow Prevention Programme and is opting to manage the risk of backflow by requiring backflow prevention devices be installed at the point of supply.
Council will work together with the public to locate potential areas of risk in the water networks and remedy the issue by installing backflow prevention devices to lessen the risk.
Have you received a letter from us about backflow prevention at your property?
We are writing to commercial, rural and industrial properties that have been classed as having a potential risk of backflow occurring.
A site audit will be conducted and, if your property is deemed to pose a risk of backflow to the public water supply, you will be required to install a backflow prevention device.
