Keeping of Poultry

No more than 10 birds (caged or otherwise) may be kept in an urban area.

A properly constructed poultry house should house poultry, with a rainproof roof and a concrete floor (or other approved material), with the option of an enclosed poultry run attached. Owners should ensure that the housing is maintained in good repair and in clean condition, free from any vermin, offensive smells or overflow.

Poultry houses and runs should not be erected within 10 metres of any dwelling, factory, or any other building, or within 2 meters of an adjoining premises' boundary.

Owners are responsible for ensuring that birds and poultry do not cause a noise nuisance to residents in the neighbourhood.

Keeping of Pigs

In the Clutha District, no more than two pigs are permitted on one property in urban areas.

Pigs should be adequately contained, and any piggery building or any area designated for the occupation of pigs cannot be located less than 50 metres from residential buildings, milking sheds, public roads, adjoining property boundaries, or any place used for preparation, storage or sale of food.

No person may keep pigs in a manner that is likely to cause a nuisance or create a danger to human or animal health.
