Zero Waste Education Programme
The Clutha District Council facilitates waste minimisation education for up to 10 schools annually across the district through the Zero Waste Education Programme, delivered to schools by our Waste Education Officer. This free programme is taught under license by the Clutha District Council, offering 9 different units to students ranging from Year 1 to Year 8.
The Zero Waste Education (ZWE) programme has been educating children about the topic of sustainable resource use since 1993. This award-winning programme is now offered to over 500 schools throughout New Zealand and was established in the Clutha District in November 2022.
This programme enables children to investigate the link between the earths natural resources, the products they use and see around them, and the resulting waste that pollutes our environment. The units delivered alternate each year, meaning that students receive new material and participate in 9 different school units, each focusing on a specific solution to our waste problem, by the time they finish Year 8.
Units cover the following topics:
- Year 1 & 2: Is That Really Rubbish / The Litterless Lunchbox
- Year 3 & 4: Reduce / Reuse
- Year 5 & 6: Recycle / Compost
- Year 7 & 8: Resource Sustainability / Water
- Years 5 - 8: Rural Recycling
