Kaitangata Community Pool handover and Memorial Garden opening
Kaitangata Community Pool handover to combine with opening of Memorial Garden
Ownership of the Kaitangata Community Swimming Pool will be handed over to a local community group on Saturday, 24 February 2024, followed by the official opening of the Kaitangata Memorial Garden.
In 2015, Clutha District Council had concerns over the costs of running the Kaitangata pool, and proposed some options for its future. Following consultation with the community, the feedback received was overwhelmingly in favour of the pool remaining open and receiving a major upgrade.
To achieve this, a community group was formed and approached Council, which resulted in an agreement for the pool to change hands, from Council to the Kaitangata Community Pool Incorporated group.
Clutha District Council will transfer the swimming pool to the Kaitangata Community Pool committee in a handover ceremony on Saturday 24 February, where committee members and councillors will attend. Transfer documents will be signed as part of the ceremony, followed by a pool party with a barbeque and drinks.
Following this, the new Kaitangata Memorial Garden will be officially opened to the public by Kaitangata Promotions, with Mayor Bryan Cadogan and councillors in attendance.
The Memorial Garden, located in central Kaitangata, is the result of a joint project which has been led by the Kaitangata community, as a result of the Our Place Kaitangata Community Plan. The Memorial Garden opening ceremony will begin at 2:00pm.
Mayor Bryan Cadogan says that the combined ceremony is an excellent way to celebrate the great community work going on in Kaitangata.
“Being in a position to hand the pool over to the community and open the memorial garden within the same day is an exciting result. It is fantastic to see the community so involved in the future of Kaitangata, once again banding together to make good things happen.”
The Kaitangata Community Pool handover ceremony will begin at 12.30pm on Saturday. The Kaitangata Community Pool committee will be running a free barbeque and drinks on the day, with entry to the pool being free for key holders or $2 for non-key holders.
